Q&A: Studying in Memory of a Friend Who Was Killed
Studying in Memory of a Friend Who Was Killed
Question
Hello Rabbi.
A friend of mine was killed on Simchat Torah. He was a tremendous masmid and had already completed the entire Talmud by 12th grade 🙂
I took it upon myself to complete the Talmud for him, set fixed study sessions, and by the thirtieth day I finished the first tractate (Berakhot). Do you think there is value in this kind of study?
I should say that I’m not studying for the elevation of his soul (I don’t believe in that, and in any case I think it is elevated enough on its own), but rather in order to continue his path and spirit in the world.
As a side note, I pray that the Holy One, blessed be He, will intervene from time to time and protect your son in Gaza. “Strike the loins of his adversaries, that those who hate him rise no more.”
Thank you in advance, and Sabbath peace (:
Answer
Hello. Thank you for the good wishes.
There is definitely value in Torah study. Does it help him? Maybe (because thanks to him, a good deed is being done in the world).
