Q&A: Taking the Place of the Hostages
Taking the Place of the Hostages
Question
Hello Rabbi,
Journalist Shaul Meislish raised the possibility that he, together with other people, would replace the children who were kidnapped by Hamas. For details, see the attached article:

This is admittedly very theoretical, and it is doubtful how realistic it could actually be. But in these times, when reality exceeds all imagination and it is no longer possible to know exactly what to expect—halakhically, is it acceptable for a person to put himself at risk in order to save someone who is in even greater danger? Does the value of an adult person versus a child enter into the halakhic considerations here? I admit that intuitively, the possibility Shaul raises does not seem halakhically possible to me. But I would be glad to know the Rabbi’s view regarding this possibility.
Answer
I saw this proposal. It does not seem serious to me. But I do not see any halakhic prohibition in it. On the contrary, it would be a noble and worthy act.
