Q&A: Maharal
Maharal
Question
I often run into a problem finding the plain meaning in faith classes at the yeshiva.
I’ve seen that the Rabbi quotes the Maharal quite a lot, so I’ll ask:
Can one generally find a plain meaning in his words (not according to “the pure worldview” and the like)?
And specifically, in Netiv HaTorah 1 regarding “one who is traveling on the road and has no escort should occupy himself with Torah”?
Answer
I have hardly dealt with the Maharal, because I don’t have much confidence in what he writes, and a lot of it I also don’t understand. In general, I also don’t see much value in studying books of Jewish thought.
Discussion on Answer
Well, just because. Since when do I have to be an expert in someone’s teachings or engage with them extensively in order to quote a passage from him?
So then, why does the Rabbi quote him (on the homepage, in the latest post, and the like)?
