Q&A: Meat and Fish
Meat and Fish
Question
What is the Rabbi’s position regarding the prohibition against eating meat together with fish, which as is well known stems from a danger concern? In a quick search online I didn’t find the slightest trace of any health concern from the standpoint of modern medicine (What? Leprosy? Who?)
Is this similar to legumes on Passover, or perhaps even sillier? Or was the decree enacted and that’s simply that?
Thank you very much
Answer
In my opinion there is no problem with it, since there does not appear to be any danger. Some have answered that this refers to a spiritual danger, but that is not convincing. Even if that is what the Sages thought (and in my opinion that is not what they thought), how would they know? They apparently held at the time that there was a danger in it, whereas today we do not think so. Even if the decree was enacted, where the decree is based on an error, it is an erroneous decree (like a mistaken transaction) and has no validity.
