Q&A: War on Demography
War on Demography
Question
Hello,
The results of the council elections show that Haredi demography is making its presence felt. Assuming we both agree that Haredi demography could pose an existential threat to Israel’s economic future (and perhaps also its democratic future, certainly regarding human rights and basic liberal values), how does the Rabbi think the state should deal with such a thing? Is it even realistic to eliminate Haredi demography? What does the Rabbi expect the future here will look like? I’m genuinely trying to be rational and I can’t manage to find any optimism.
Answer
From my experience, I’ve learned not to predict and issue forecasts. Reality is stubborn and independent, and it does not always obey our logic.
