Q&A: Music
Music
Question
Hello Rabbi, and good evening,
Is it permissible to listen to songs by non-Jews if they have good lyrics? There are also love songs between a man and a woman that aren’t vulgar or anything like that, although
I understood that this is called erotic songs and is forbidden to listen to. More generally, I’ve often heard people say that “bad” music defiles the soul, or that the singer himself affects the listener. Is there any truth to that?
And one more, more personal question while we’re at it, just if you feel like answering—what kinds of music genres do you connect with?
Do you think that says something about a person in some way? After all, music has power and it affects the soul.
Answer
I don’t see any problem with it. I don’t believe in mysticism of that kind. Music affects people in different ways, but in my opinion it is not true that there is evil music, or music composed by evil people, that will make me evil.
Erotic songs are connected to forbidden thoughts and fantasies. See, for example, here: https://www.yeshiva.org.il/ask/15899
