Q&A: A Tailoring Shop Owner Debating Between Gaza and China
A Tailoring Shop Owner Debating Between Gaza and China
Question
Good week, Rabbi,
If, say, there is a tailoring shop owner who is debating whether to outsource sewing work to Gaza or to China. On the one hand, sending work to Gaza would cause people there to be occupied with work instead of terrorism, and would improve their economic situation, which also helps prevent a slide into terrorism. On the other hand, why work with someone who wants to destroy you?
What do you think?
Best regards,
Answer
I don’t have a position on it. In my view, he should do whatever is most worthwhile for him. China isn’t exactly an enlightened country either, to put it mildly. And providing people with a livelihood anywhere is a good thing. If withholding work from Gaza would help us, then the answer would be simple. But I don’t see the benefit.
