Regarding the Jewish laws of physical/social closeness between men and women (avoiding touch / women singing / mixed dancing, and the like), does the Rabbi recommend it? I’d also be interested to know what, in the Rabbi’s opinion, is the best way for a person to know Jewish law: to study all the sources independently and issue rulings for oneself, to choose a Jewish law book for oneself, or to ask a rabbi?

I’m not familiar with it. Clearly, the goal should be to understand the topic and rule for yourself. But until you get there, it’s worth choosing a book or a rabbi.
