Q&A: Talmudic Logic
Talmudic Logic
Question
I really enjoyed your article on a fortiori reasoning, which I sat over with a friend, and even though we got stuck halfway through, neither of us is stupid.
The question is: how would you recommend that a yeshiva student with a general education learn from your other writings on logic? English is less accessible, and formal definitions are pretty exhausting.
Answer
You’re asking me how it’s possible to study a text in English if you don’t know English? But none of my material is written in English. The book titles on Amazon are in English, but the books themselves are written in Hebrew. Are you asking how to study a text that includes definitions without getting into the definitions? I suggest you start by working on your thinking before asking questions, and then maybe we can move on.
Discussion on Answer
Our books are in Hebrew except for Book 10, which is a collection of articles in English. There’s also a book or two there that aren’t ours — I seem to remember number 6.
You mean the series of twelve books, which are in Hebrew? If so, excellent — it just didn’t look that way.
(As for the definitions, we’ll manage; I’ll summarize it in my own language and then send it to you so you can be horrified.)
Thank you!
