Q&A: Theory and Nothing More
Theory and Nothing More
Question
Let me start by saying:
I’m asking completely theoretical questions. They may seem pointless, but in my view they lead to some interesting practical implications.
(1) Today there are scientists who predict that the emergence of human capacities can be made predictable; all that’s needed is a few tons of quantum computer…
Let’s stay in the theoretical realm: supposedly, it could be that everything is programmed by aliens who are simply running one program after another, each time changing the size of some constant, or throwing a “virus” into the world in order to see what will happen.
If so, how can such a claim be ruled out? And perhaps a more important question: does it matter?
(2) Another question: as is well known, the Laws of Ur-Nammu are a very ancient law code found in archaeological excavations, from the 20th-21st centuries BCE, and the Laws of Hammurabi also prevailed in the world during that period.
According to tradition, the Torah was given to the Jewish people toward the end of the 19th century BCE.
The laws I mentioned are very reminiscent of the laws of the Torah. In their very form they have a casuistic structure (“if you do x, y will happen / you will be punished with y”), very similar to the laws of our Torah.
The periods are very close, and the content of the laws resembles many of the laws found in the book of Leviticus, for example (slavery, treatment of divorcees/widows, terms of payment between one person and another, monetary law, and so on).
Everyone would agree that the Torah was given after these laws, and I wonder whether this ought to raise a question for us. Perhaps the author of the Torah came up with something ingenious based on the Laws of Hammurabi, and that’s why it has been preserved to this day?
(3) We’re speaking theoretically, of course, but what if they told you that a manuscript had been found documenting a conversation between two geniuses from that same period, discussing their writing of a book called “the Torah,” talking about Israel, perhaps even one criticizing the other’s brilliant writing. They literally write where they got each and every idea, and mention the Laws of Hammurabi, etc.
If such writings were found—would that change anything for you?
Answer
- I didn’t understand the question. What are they predicting? What is “human emergence”? Who exactly is doing what, and why?
- Maybe.
- Absolutely.
