Q&A: Reality Shows
Reality Shows
Question
Hello,
Most television viewers in Israel during the evening hours watch reality shows like The Amazing Race and Big Brother, etc. These are programs devoid of any value-based content, and if anything, the opposite. And I often wonder what causes people who are usually educational and value-driven people (- from my acquaintance with the people around me) to watch these things and also expose their children to them? How is it that the entire mainstream public in the State of Israel is up to date on and enthusiastically stirring around in this moral sewer? I simply can’t digest the explanation that “in the end, the masses want bread and circuses.” That may have been true in Rome, but here I see around me people who are not like that in other areas of life—what is going on here? I would appreciate an answer that would set my mind at ease.
Answer
I don’t watch, so I’m not directly familiar with those programs,
but in my view it is legitimate to engage in entertainment in reasonable measure.
