Q&A: Zionism and Judaism
Zionism and Judaism
Question
Hello Rabbi, do you define yourself as a Zionist?
If so, why? Is there some limit to devotion to the state?
And more generally, what is the Rabbi’s view of the *State* of Israel? After all, this is an almost entirely secular state, which in the end is not the vision of the prophets. What are the chances that this is the beginning of the redemption the prophets spoke about? Are Rabbi Kook of blessed memory and his students definitely right when they say that the State of Israel is the “beginning of redemption”?
I would be happy for sources.
Answer
What sources? The angel Gabriel?
I am definitely a Zionist.
I didn’t understand your question about limits. In any case, it’s far too general.
So what if it is secular?
I have no idea about “beginnings” and “footsteps” and the rest of these empty slogans, about which no one has known anything up to now, and no one will know anything going forward either.
Discussion on Answer
I don’t know. It’s an undefined hypothetical question.

It seems to me he was trying to ask whether you see value in living specifically in Israel, such that you would expect a Jew who was born and raised abroad to immigrate to Israel, or whether, since there is no obligation / commandment / value in that, there is no reason at all to demand / expect this from a Jew.
There is definitely value in it. Who said there isn’t?
Michi, you claim that you are “definitely a Zionist”; if you had been born in America, would you have made aliyah to Israel?
