Q&A: Evolution and Absurdism
Evolution and Absurdism
Question
I have a question for the Rabbi.
Evolution created millions of years during which there were human beings who lived out entire lives. By contrast, the Torah was given only about 3,000 years ago.
My understanding of this is that the Holy One, blessed be He, created His world through a natural process, and that’s simply how it works.
The question is whether that doesn’t make the lives of all the people who lived before the giving of the Torah somewhat unnecessary on a massive scale.
They didn’t even have anything on the basis of which to receive reward, let alone meaning or even any kind of faith / belief (they weren’t wise enough to believe).
Can one really say this absurd thing about those human lives—that technically, most of the time there has been no Torah in the world rather than Torah in the world?
After all, again, that turns their lives into something unnecessary from a Jewish perspective… and it’s very easy to say they lacked spiritual meaning, but what if it had been us?
Thank you very much!
Answer
The Noahide commandments and morality always existed (the Holy One, blessed be He, punishes Cain for murder). This is a necessary developmental stage on the way to the giving of the Torah, which represents a higher stage in spiritual evolution. The entire formation of the world takes place through a developmental process; it does not reach its purpose immediately. It is certainly reasonable that we too are only another stage along the way. The perspective is not on the destiny of an individual person, but on that of the world and human society as a whole.
