Q&A: Jewish Law and Morality Following the Latest Debate
Jewish Law and Morality Following the Latest Debate
Question
Hello and blessings,
I watched the debate with Yaron Yadan, and following that I have a question:
You drew a fairly sharp distinction between morality and Jewish law. I had always thought there was overlap (not identity), but it sounded from you as though you believe there is real foreignness between them.
That’s a bit strange, because the Torah is full of moral rationales for various commandments (certainly those between one person and another; it appears explicitly in the Bible, and even more so in the words of the Sages), so there is at least some overlap here, isn’t there?
Thank you
Answer
See the column on morality and Jewish law; there are proofs there for this distinction. As for the rationales, this question has already been asked here in recent days.
