Q&A: On the Books of Ecclesiastes and Proverbs
On the Books of Ecclesiastes and Proverbs
Question
Hello Rabbi. I wanted to ask whether it is possible to refute the morality and outlook embedded in the books of Ecclesiastes and Proverbs. For example, if people were to reach the conclusion that the inclination of the human heart is good from youth and not evil, then I would essentially have refuted a verse from the Hebrew Bible (Tanakh). This is difficult to do in a religious context, because we hold (at least I do) that the entire Hebrew Bible is prophecy from God, and that every piece of information there possesses holiness and divine wisdom.
Thank you, and have a good day
Answer
A strange question. A. How would you determine good or evil? Does it have to be completely good or completely evil? B. If the Torah is divine, then in practice you will not find a contradictory finding, and so it will not be refuted.
