Q&A: Taxes in the State of Israel
Taxes in the State of Israel
Question
Is a person allowed to hide part of the taxes he owes the state because of the claim that some of the taxes are used for food and care for despicable murderous terrorists?
Answer
No. You could ask the same question about Sabbath desecration, and right-wingers about funding for the left, and vice versa. These are legitimate decisions of the duly authorized government. You should also keep in mind that beyond the question of whether it is proper to do this, there are also considerations of international law and political pressure that carry significant consequences. There may be situations in which, even if we do not think it is right to do this, if we do not do it we will pay a heavy price in human lives or economically, and that itself justifies the matter. For whoever sits at home, these decisions look very easy and obvious. The decision is entrusted to those elected for that purpose and equipped with the relevant information. That does not mean they are always right or always acting objectively, but you cannot determine that they are not without the information.
