Q&A: Interest and the Reason for the Commandments
Interest and the Reason for the Commandments
Question
Hello Rabbi,
I didn’t understand why God commands the prohibition of interest; I don’t understand the reason for it. Also, in your opinion, do the commandments need a reason, or is it that whatever God said has to be done without asking questions?
Answer
I don’t understand either. But to the best of my understanding, the reasons for the commandments are not found on the moral plane, and there is no point in looking for them there—or in looking for them at all. Do you understand the reason for pork or ritual impurity?
The commandments are binding because the Holy One, blessed be He, commanded us to observe them.
Discussion on Answer
Is that what you understood from what I wrote? You really need to improve your reading comprehension.
So God commands without a reason.
