Q&A: The Tension Between God’s Perfection and Religion
The Tension Between God’s Perfection and Religion
Question
Hello Rabbi,
This is a question that on the one hand seems like it belongs to the Middle Ages, but I think it is still very much alive and kicking 🙂
How do you deal with the idea of God’s perfection, infinitude, and greatness, versus religion, which as is well known portrays God as changing, wanting things, revealing Himself to human beings?
In general, insofar as He is described in terms of change, do you accept the philosophers’ approach that all these descriptions are really just metaphor and not literal?
Or do you accept the kabbalists’ approach that the change is only in the sefirot (not that I really have any idea what that means…)
Or does the whole issue simply not bother you at all?
Thank you!
Answer
C. In other words, it doesn’t bother me at all.
