Q&A: Honor for the Torah
Honor for the Torah
Question
Heaven forbid, it’s not that I begrudge the honor of the Torah, but it seems to me that nowadays there is exaggeration and excess in everything connected to the honor given to Torah scholars (especially Haredi ones). People stand up for them, sing to them, and admire them. Whatever the rabbi says is done immediately, and none of his words may be allowed to fall to the ground. All the more so, one may not criticize him even by hint. And I’m not even talking about all the praise and titles like “the brilliant great rabbi,” “our master, teacher, and rabbi,” “the distinguished rabbi of all the Children of the Exile,” and so on. Because of this, there is almost no criticism of them, not even mild criticism, and in my opinion that is the bigger problem. I tried to find material on the site about this topic but without success. Is the great honor given to Torah scholars appropriate, or is it, as I think, an exaggeration?
Answer
You’re presenting a very sweeping description, but it varies from place to place and from rabbi to rabbi. The proper standards also depend on the setting.
