Q&A: The Miracle of the Oil Flask
The Miracle of the Oil Flask
Question
Lately I’ve had a lot of doubts about the reliability of the story of the miracle of the oil flask.
Who exactly are we supposed to believe in this story—the Hasmonean dynasty? (In a certain sense they were the politicians of that period, and over the generations there were various problems with them, to put it mildly.) Who saw the miracle? Only the priests? Who can guarantee that they didn’t add more oil? (It seems to me this is also a function of the width of the opening, which affects the size of the flame and therefore the oil consumption.)
After these doubts, I saw that it also doesn’t appear at all in the Book of Maccabees, and that the eight days are attributed there to other things (the parallel to Sukkot and the like).
In your opinion, did it really happen?
Answer
I have no idea. Why is that important? And if it’s only a myth, so what?
