Q&A: Law for the Messianic Era
Law for the Messianic Era
Question
In “On Platonism 19,” the Rabbi said that even if theoretically we could create particulars that would serve our needs even without the knowledge of how the mechanism works, there is still value in knowing the principle by which the particulars work, for the sake of truth itself.
And the same applies in Jewish law: there is Platonic value in knowing various principles that in practice could never actually be realized in the real world, for the sake of truth itself.
On another occasion, the Rabbi explained regarding the Talmud’s question, “Is this law only for the Messianic era?” that one must say the Talmud did not find a relevant Platonic value there, and therefore raised that question.
My question is: even if the Talmud did not find a Platonic value, it is still important for us to know the truth in itself simply because it is truth. If so, how could the Talmud ever ask, “Is this law only for the Messianic era?”
Thank you very much!
Answer
I didn’t understand the question. If there is no Platonic value, then what is it that you want to know? Truth is the Platonic value.
