Q&A: Reason for the Creation of the World
Reason for the Creation of the World
Question
Hello Rabbi,
Do you accept the explanation that God created the world for no reason?
If not—why not? Is it because it makes sense that everything needs a reason, including God’s actions?
Thank you.
Answer
That does not seem likely. Indeed, it is reasonable to think that anyone who does something does so for some purpose. There is also a possible hypothesis about His purpose. Search here for “perfection and self-perfection.”
Discussion on Answer
I attribute basic logic to any being. It isn’t certain, but it’s more reasonable that He has a reason than that He doesn’t. The burden of proof is on whoever claims that He doesn’t. Especially since He Himself tells us that we have a task, and that presumably is meant to achieve something.
It sounds like people are attributing to God actions and considerations like those of human beings—that every action is done in order to achieve some result. Wouldn’t it be more correct to say that we have no way of knowing the answer to this, since we have no grasp of something beyond our world (God)?
