Q&A: Haim Shavili – the best interpreter of the Book of Daniel?
Haim Shavili – the best interpreter of the Book of Daniel?
Question
Haim Shavili defined himself as “a simple Jew, neither a rabbi nor a doctor.” He explained the prophecies in Daniel differently from all those who preceded him: he claimed that 186 years are missing from the Hebrew calendar as commonly accepted by us, and in addition, he emphasized that there are no gematrias in Daniel, only calculations of years and days.
By this method he wrote two books:
In 1935 he wrote the book The Vision of Life. In it he predicted in advance the Second World War, which would begin before the year 5700 (page 79) and would include England and Italy (page 77), with Italian, English, and German submarines (pages 81-82), and that in the year 5709 something great would occur (page 84).
In 1964 he wrote the book Calculations of the Redemption, in which he raised the possibility that the “end of wrath” would be in the year 5727 (page 28).
However, there are also events in his words that did not take place; for example, he estimated that an atomic war might break out in the years 5726-5730 (Calculations of the Redemption, page 39).
Does the Rabbi know the man or his books, and above all – what is the Rabbi’s opinion?
Answer
I don’t know him.
