Q&A: Whether One Can Understand God
Whether One Can Understand God
Question
Hello, I want to ask a question. God is the first one who created the world. Can we understand why God is the maker and creator, and why He is the one in charge? We understand that whenever something is ruled, someone gave that authority into his hands—but God, who gave it to Him, and why Him? And how did He create Himself? Where did He come from?
Answer
In the future, please make sure to phrase your question more clearly. The Holy One, blessed be He, does not need a cause to create Him. If you assume that everything requires a cause, you end up in an infinite regress, and therefore there is apparently a first link in the chain that does not require a cause. That is the Holy One, blessed be He.
The question is whether an infinite regress is logically problematic, because if it isn’t, then there could be a first link—but that wouldn’t be a necessary logical conclusion, only more like an option/possibility.
