Two Questions

Question

Hello Rabbi,

I have two questions.
1. A lot of grease accumulated in my grill, in the tray of grease underneath it, so that it became one big lump.
Do I need to clean that for Passover?
Or is it considered something a dog couldn’t eat, so it is disqualified on its own?

2. I recently read that there are some who say that a garbage can is muktzeh on the Sabbath and it is forbidden to move it by hand.
I really like to move the garbage can closer when I’m cleaning.
That reasoning seems a bit crooked to me, because if it’s permitted to throw things into the garbage and to take the bag out of the garbage can, then it makes sense to me that this is permitted.

What does the Rabbi think about this, and are there really people who hold that way?

Answer

Two questiones, not questions.

  1. Decide for yourself whether it is fit for a dog’s consumption or not. I am not a dog expert. Beyond that, meat grease is not leavened food in itself. And finally, there is a difference between a concern that you might eat it and the prohibition of “it shall not be seen.” If you are not using the grill on Passover, there is no need to clean it. You can sell it just to be on the safe side, and that’s it.
  2. Are there some who don’t say that? There is a permission under the rule of a “graf shel re’i” to remove disgusting things on the Sabbath. And still, they are muktzeh.
