Q&A: Lighting a Torch with AI
Lighting a Torch with AI
Question
Maybe you heard: Ofra Haza is going to light a torch using AI. Beyond the fact that it’s cool, do you think it’s ethical? I mean, she’s dead and all, but maybe if she were alive she would refuse, because of her opposition to the government or just for other reasons. Do you agree that there’s something problematic here?
Answer
I hadn’t heard. I don’t think there’s a problem. Everyone knows that this is not actually Ofra Haza, so no wrong is being done to her. Maybe one could talk about rights to use her likeness, but I don’t see a moral problem here.
Discussion on Answer
I think there are moral guidelines with respect to the dead as well. Just as I wouldn’t harm a living person who is asleep and would never hear about it.
You mean anti-moral, of course.
And why, really, is there a problem with harming a living person who is asleep and would never hear about it?
Because he wouldn’t want that to happen.
If there are moral guidelines toward the dead, then you have to assume life after death, right?
In my opinion, no.
In general, what do you think about immoral behavior toward the dead?
