Two Questions

Question

Hello Rabbi

1. What do you think about renewing the war in Gaza? It doesn't seem like there is any horizon for the day after (hasn't it already arrived?), there is no clear policy, the innocent people in Gaza are already suffering too much—what is the justification for continuing there?

2. On the base where I serve there is family housing, and they have a soccer field with a sign at the entrance saying, “For housing residents only.” Sometimes it happens that my buddies play there. Is it permitted to play there? Or is that theft?

Thank you.

Answer

  1. There has never been more of a horizon for this war, for a thousand reasons. A. It is a threat to Hamas that can bring about the release of hostages. We already gained Edan Alexander from this (contrary to the anti-Bibi propaganda that Trump was the one who got him released; what did it was our threat to expand the war). B. If they do not surrender, this is the time to go after them and destroy them. Keep fighting for another year or two until they are eliminated. There is no reason we should not succeed at this. This is an opportunity that will not return. C. There is no reason to set a policy for the day after. After we eliminate Hamas, we can bring in whoever we want. Before we eliminate it, nobody will volunteer to deal with it in our place. The innocent people in Gaza do not exist. There are uninvolved people, but there are almost no innocent people. And they definitely have not suffered enough; the proof is that the hostages have still not returned and Hamas has still not surrendered. When that happens, we will know that they have suffered enough.
  2. It depends on the law. Whoever owns the area determines what may be done there. In an ordinary city, the housing area beyond the homes does not belong to the residents but to the municipality.

What did you mean when you said that there are no innocent people in Gaza, only uninvolved people? What is the difference?

And regarding enough suffering of the uninvolved, why do you think that when they suffer enough Hamas will back down and release hostages? Hamas only profits from their suffering.

The difference is that all Gazans are a collective pursuer whom it is permitted to harm, even if there are uninvolved people among them. The responsibility is on everyone, even if not the blame. Innocent people are those who do not even bear responsibility. See my columns on the treatment of Gaza residents.
If Hamas knows it is going to be destroyed, it stops profiting from their suffering, and they will stop supporting it and obeying it. Hamas's whole game works only on the assumption that they survive, and then the suffering helps them.
