Q&A: Counterfeit Brands on Chinese Websites
Counterfeit Brands on Chinese Websites
Question
Hello Rabbi, as someone who often shops online, I come across international commerce websites, especially Chinese sites like AliExpress, where many products are offered bearing well-known brand names such as Disney. Sometimes I suspect they are counterfeits, and so I avoid buying them. However, since the Chinese have a reputation for violating copyright, I wonder whether many other products on the site—even those not clearly identified with brands—might also infringe copyright in other ways, for example by using designs or illustrations taken from independent designers without permission. My question is: how should one act from a halakhic perspective in such a situation? Should I completely refrain from purchasing products of this kind, even when it is impossible to know for certain whether copyright has been violated?
Answer
I am not familiar with the matter. If there is a concern about theft and violation of rights, then it is certainly proper to refrain.
