Q&A: Visiting the Graves of Rabbis
Visiting the Graves of Rabbis
Question
Hello Rabbi,
Perhaps you can explain how visiting a grave—when a dead body is the primary source of ritual impurity—has become, among Haredim and even among ordinary religious people, a “holy” place?
How can it be that people who study holiness and impurity go to an impure place, some of them even prostrating themselves on the graves, and don’t see the dissonance?
I’m certainly not looking for a psychological explanation, but how can this be explained in halakhic terms? As though it is supposedly “worth” becoming impure in order to attain some spiritual benefit that comes from visiting the grave?
Answer
The dead impart impurity, but that does not contradict the (groundless) assumption that visiting a grave provides spiritual benefits. Moreover, there are claims that the graves of righteous people do not impart impurity (those are based on the same mistake that you have).
