Q&A: Sukkah
Sukkah
Question
Rabbi, I’m staying with my girlfriend’s grandmother over the holiday, and there’s a sukkah there. Am I obligated to sleep in that sukkah? If I don’t feel comfortable because her uncle will probably also be sleeping there, and in general I’m a bit embarrassed around her family, can I choose not to sleep there?
Answer
In principle, there is an obligation to sleep in the sukkah, even casual sleep. The exemption for someone who is suffering discomfort is, according to many halakhic decisors, said only where the discomfort is objective—that is, where any reasonable person would be uncomfortable there. But it seems to me that there is room to be lenient, in accordance with other halakhic decisors.
