Q&A: The Aquinas Argument
The Aquinas Argument
Question
I wanted to ask the Rabbi about something I read in his book God Plays with Dice regarding Aquinas’s argument. I wanted to know whether part of the argument is that what stops the regress is something rational or conscious, even if not in the religious sense, or whether there is another possibility. And if so, it is not clear to me why this is a claim that has no alternative atheistic answer.
P.S. I wanted to ask about another topic: if the universe is infinite—that is, not the material universe but what lies beyond it—then regarding the design argument, that if there is order then there is an organizer, doesn’t the fact that the field of possibilities is infinite overturn everything? (I haven’t gotten to the part in the book where you talk about this, if at all, but I can’t resist asking.)
Thank you very much!
Answer
I didn’t understand the first question. As for the second, keep reading.
Discussion on Answer
It doesn’t have to be, but it’s very likely. Otherwise we are talking about a machine programmed to create our universe, and then the question returns: who created it?
If so, then why is it not necessary?
Because nothing is certain. It’s a plausible inference.
Regarding the first question, what I mean is: does the entity that is its own cause, creates all beings, and does not need a creator, have to be an intelligent and conscious being, or is there another possibility?
