Q&A: A Specific Question
A Specific Question
Question
Are we obligated to obey the Sanhedrin if it becomes clear that they were mistaken about the facts, since they are the source of authority? Aside from sanctifying the new month, of course!
Answer
With the Sanhedrin, the problem is fundamentally different from what we are familiar with. When there is a Sanhedrin and you think they made a mistake in the facts or in Jewish law, you can always come and try to convince them of that. If they are persuaded, then everything is fine. And if not, then apparently you are not right, and at least halakhically, in my opinion, one should obey them. Today, the problem is that those who established the binding determinations in Jewish law (the Talmud) are not here for me to try to convince them. Therefore, here I argue that in a case of a clear factual error, their words are void.
