A few questions that came to my mind during the holiday

שו"תA few questions that came to my mind during the holiday
שאל לפני 9 שנים

Hello Rabbi, during the holiday I had a few questions.
1) We arrived home during the holiday and discovered that we forgot to plug the hob into an outlet that works on a Shabbat clock. Is it permissible to plug it into the outlet when I know that it will only start working in a few more hours? If this is prohibited, given a situation where someone plugged it in on their own, is it permissible to enjoy the hob?
2) I was in several synagogues during the holiday, and I was very bothered by the trend of the gabbais to take advantage of the holiday and sell anything that moved. If they used to sell aliyat, today they sell literally everything (for example, a blessing for the week's Torah study, for the Zohar study of Motzesh, for Tehillim, a weekly/monthly/annual blessing, and so on). The gabbai of course promises whoever buys a prosperous and successful year, etc. It gives the impression of selling amulets a little bit and of course a waste of a lot of time for the public (the sale lasted about fifteen minutes!). I wanted to know what the rabbi thought about this.

Sorry for the delay. I missed it.
  1. In my opinion, it is permissible to do this. At most, this is a violation of the law. Certainly when it comes to the pleasure of Yot (for the Yot meal). This is assuming that the watch is already connected and you are just inserting the plate into it. Connecting the watch itself causes it to start moving immediately, which is prohibited.
  2. I don't like it either. So I suggest that if it bothers you, offer the collectors all the money they need and they will give up on the sales. If you don't have money or don't want to give – I see no room for criticism. As for the wishes for a successful year, I assume these are wishes and not promises. Wishing is always allowed. Even when you say Happy New Year to your friend, you wish him the same.
