Blessing before eating animal food

שו"תBlessing before eating animal food
שאל לפני 7 שנים

Hello Rabbi,
Unfortunately, when I talk to religious people, even the idealists among them, I find that they are deaf to the whole vegan thing. They idealize eating meat (the vision of fasting and peace), avoid even debating because "the Torah permits it," etc. That's why when I saw what you wrote about veganism, I was so happy.
I wanted to ask a question that has been bothering me for a long time. I have been a vegan in principle for a year now, but it is very difficult for me and sometimes I can't help myself and eat animal food. Should I say a blessing on such food?
I keep thinking about the Gemara that says it is forbidden to recite a blessing over stolen matzah because “the blessing was performed by God.” There is an insult to God when one recites a blessing over food obtained through immoral means.
Am I, as someone who knows the cost of eating meat, milk, and eggs, supposed to bless them when I fail and eat them?
Thank you very much,
June

Hello June. I think it is unreasonable not to say a blessing when eating it. Halachically, it is a blessing over food obtained through a prohibition (such as theft) and not a moral problem. And also regarding prohibitions, not necessarily all of them. The food does not pass a clear halachic prohibition. It may help breeders who abuse animals, but that is not enough to not say a blessing. I think the fact that you sometimes do not meet this standard (and so do I) means that in your eyes, too, it is not a normal halakhic prohibition (like pork and the like). We live among our people, and unfortunately today it is a standard. It is not reasonable in my opinion to declare a standard situation that is a prohibition to the extent that one should not recite a blessing over the food.
