"Conservative Midrash" on the Laws of Yevom
I have read the trilogy and I follow some of your lectures on YouTube. I will ask a direct question, what do you teach in the following case. A widow falls on the floor before her late husband's only brother who cannot perform a halutz. Let's assume that he is completely legless, so by all accounts it is impossible to perform a halutz from the Torah (over his leg…). In this case, we have no relevant knowledge that was not known to the Sages. The widow, of course, wants to marry and rebuild her life. The halakhic "solution" is for the poor widow to marry against her will (this is more or less the definition of rape) and then get a divorce. In my opinion, there are precedents today that this is the court's ruling. Needless to say, the feelings that such a ruling evokes. In practical terms, if you are sitting in such a case, what do you teach?
