Electricity on Saturday

שו"תElectricity on Saturday
שאל לפני 10 שנים

Following a friend's question, what do you think about prohibiting electricity on Shabbat? From what I remember checking, it's not really like lighting a fire, but more like "reducing" the life of an appliance, but on the other hand, the feature of devices turning off and on, or in general the flow of electricity within them, is part of their internal function, so in my humble opinion, you're not really creating anything new here the moment you turn on the TV (it's not like the last screw in the table you're building).
I would love to know what you think about this.

Electricity on Shabbat appears in several different forms. There are electronic devices, light bulbs and incandescent devices (like an oven) and more. In some cases there is room to discuss the burner, in devices there are discussions about a blow with a hammer (operating it by electricity is as if it has completed its preparation for operation). I tend to agree with your opinion that there is no blow with a hammer here that completes the work. The prevailing opinion is that in most cases this is a rabbinical prohibition (almost always generates a current, and perhaps other things in different cases). In any case, it is not recommended to operate such devices on Shabbat, if only because of the custom that the Jews received not to operate them. This is a correct and appropriate custom, for it is clear that if Chazal were alive today, they would prohibit the use of electrical devices (this is also written by Agam in his well-known reply on the Sabbath clock, although in fact he is not inclined to prohibit it for this reason alone. But he agrees with the assessment that Chazal would indeed prohibit it if they were alive today. Therefore, when this is added to an existing custom, there is definitely room for prohibition).
