Gittin 2.

שו"תGittin 2.
שאל לפני 2 שנים

Hello Rabbi
On the issue of the life of the deceased, the G.M. says, "In the direction of the epileptic iflig" and Rashi, the E.M. Iflig – "And it is not like the rest of the people to be close to death, but one who is eighty-one years old or older up to ninety is close to death": This is of course completely absurd. Is there a way to try to understand perhaps another interpretation in the G.M.???

Why is this absurd? It's not absurd at all. It's debatable at what age this is true, but there are many such mechanisms. For example, the life expectancy of people over the age of 40 is about 90. The stages of death are not distributed evenly across the age axis. Again, this doesn't mean that the Gemara is specifically right about those ages, but the mechanism exists.
