Question about Mara Datra

שו"תQuestion about Mara Datra
שאל לפני 10 שנים

Hello Rabbi Michael,

I saw that it is written in Tractate Shabbat, leaf 11, 1a:

In Rabbi Eliezer's place, they would cut down trees to make charcoal and make iron on Shabbat. In Rabbi Yossi the Galilean's place, they would eat chicken meat in milk.

It seems that they followed the halakha according to the opinion of Hamra Da'tra, even though it was the opinion of a single person. But it is well known that the rule is singular and plural, the halakha is plural. If so, why did they follow the opinion of Hamra Da'tra, even though it was the opinion of a single person?

Best regards,

They follow many in the Jewish court when they are counted together and vote. Before the matter is decided in the Sanhedrin, each one follows according to his own opinion or the custom of his place.
After some time, the matter was resolved and everyone practices a prohibition on eating chicken with milk.
