Sales permit

שו"תSales permit

Hello Rabbi Michael, I wanted to ask you about the sales permit. Is it possible to be lenient in the first place? Or should we be stricter on the issue, as the Haredim believe, and why?

In my opinion, there is no reason to be lenient. In fact, in my opinion, it is forbidden to "get stricter" (therefore, it is not harsh but rather harsh) according to the Haredi opinion. And the explanation is that the Haredi solution is not applicable today. After all, if a farmer really clears his fields and does not work on the Sabbath, he loses his markets for years to come (after all, there are no shortages in the market. His customers will buy from others who will take his place). It is clear that they oppose the permit only because they do not care about the fate of the farmers (because there are no Haredi farmers, by the way). Seriously, if it is permissible to sell leaven, which does not cause any loss to anyone, and is a Torah prohibition, why would it be prohibited to sell land on the seventh day, which entails a loss of income for years, and is a rabbinical prohibition (and according to Rabbi Ovadia, is merely a custom)? Can you see any logic in this? They buy fruits and vegetables from Arabs, partly to avoid handing over Israeli land to non-Jews (don't beg – they won't let you park on the land). Really strange, isn't it? If buying vegetables from them doesn't increase their grip on the land, I don't know what does. Therefore, it is quite clear to me that this is a political war and economic interests (the marketers of "fancy" produce are a notoriously corrupt bunch, and they engage in very large-scale frauds), and one should not pay any attention to the haredi nonsense in this matter (as well as in most other matters).
