Should we enter a war from which we can mostly lose?
If the state enters into a direct confrontation with the Haredim anyway, it will almost certainly not cause anyone to enlist, and perhaps it will cause those who were thinking of enlisting to regret it.
So let's assume the state puts everyone in prison for long periods.
And regarding the money, let's assume that you deprive them of any budget, ostensibly the state will save money, but then the Haredim will respond by harassing the state, which will cost us all much more, and then the state will also end up losing what it saves.
The army, of course, will not grow, and the headache will continue to be on those who enlist.
The worst thing is – there will be an evil spirit among parts of the people.
What do we get out of all this in the end?
On the other hand, it is possible to compromise on an outline that will result in the recruitment of significant numbers of Haredim. Not all of them, not even the majority. But even with what the IDF recruits, it will inevitably grow, and at least we will reach a compromise among the people and there will be good will among the people, after the overwhelming majority on all sides agree to the compromise.
So what's the headache for?
