The authority of the Talmud

שו"תThe authority of the Talmud
שאל לפני 3 שנים

Rabbi, you wrote somewhere that the authority of the Talmud is because the entire House of Israel accepted it, but is this the only reason? If, for example, the House of Israel accepted idolatry or did not know how to bow down to one's husband, or instead of "You shall not murder," they would say, "From now on, you shall murder," would you still accept these things, and if the Sages were speaking nonsense and the entire Talmud was full of it, would you still accept it?

There was a concern here about upholding what the public accepted, but against that stood the value of not doing stupid or bad things, and it probably would have prevailed. Just like a law that tells me to act against my conscience, it was rejected and not permitted. By the way, this is not a single reason either, meaning it does not stand on its own. There is also some logic behind it (the proximity to the source at Mount Sinai gives the sages a better position than us to understand the will of the Torah). But this assumption in itself would not create formal authority, but only substantive authority. That is why there is Kabbalah. Just as in the Torah commandments, each one has a logic as to why it was said, but the binding force is because we were commanded.
