The Tastes of the Mitzvot – Counting the Omer and Shavuot as an Example

We count every day from Pesach to Atzeret. Do you think the purpose is the actual counting? What's the point of 'counting'? God wants us to count because 'this is how it is' and it's impossible to understand?
Does this mean that one must prepare to receive the Torah? And if so, how should one prepare for it?
