Two snake embryos
Hello Rabbi,
Your approach regarding the fact that the Gemara did not come to teach us zoology but rather understandable Torah and morality, as well as the part that it is a parable, etc. But how can you say this about the Midrash?
"A philosopher wanted to know how many snakes give birth . Since he saw them busy with each other, he took them and fed them in a barrel, and they had enough food until they gave birth . Since the elders went up to Rome, they asked Rabban Gamliel . He said to him: How many does the snake give birth to? And he could not bring it back, and his face became pale. . Rabbi Yehoshua struck him, and his face became sickly.. He said to him: Why is your face so sickly?? He said to him: I was asked one question and I could not answer it.. He said to him: What is it?? He said: How many times does a snake give birth?. He said to him: For seven years.. He said to him: "What do you want?"? He said to him: The dog is an unclean animal and gives birth in fifty days, and an unclean animal gives birth in twelve months, and it is written: "Cursed are you above all animals and above all beasts of the field," and just as the animal is cursed above the seven-footed animal, so the snake is cursed above the seven-footed animal.. As for Ramsha, he said to him,. He started banging his head against the wall.. He said: "Everything I worked for seven years, this one came and gave me in one go."
And so does the Gemara in the first verses.
"The Emperor asked Rabbi Yehoshua ben Hananiah: How long does a snake take to mate and give birth? The Emperor asked Rabbi Yehoshua ben Hananiah: How long does it take for a snake to mate? He answered: Seven years. And the ancestors of the Athenians (the Greek sages) mate with snakes, and they gave birth three years later? And the Hebrews were four years old [the same snakes mated four years earlier], and the Kameshmesh Shimoshi? [And the snakes mated (when the Athenians mated them)], and the Hachemi were not used as a man [{There is no evidence to support this, since} snakes also mate for purposes other than reproduction, similar to humans]. And the Hachemi were not used? [And they (the Athenians) are wise], and we (the Sages of Israel) are wiser than them]."
That it is impossible to say that the Gemara does not necessarily claim that empirical science is correct and accurate in its calculations of verses, even though science says that a year and a half can be two years of a snake's gestation? And the Torah as historical proof contradicts the Gemara's words that the sages of Athens found that after three years, which is not true?
I would be happy for an answer.
