Value in knowledge

שו"תValue in knowledge
שאל לפני 3 שנים

Good evening.
Is there value in knowing the truth when it does not affect actions? I understand, for example, that the value of a moral act depends on my knowing that I am doing something moral, but my question is whether knowing the truth alone has any value.
Is there value in knowing the Torah when the Talmud does not lead to action? Perhaps there is value in the study itself, which is a mitzvah (and even then the question returns to what is defined as study, is it the knowledge itself or only if it leads to action…), but is the knowledge itself a value?

In my opinion, yes, absolutely. Knowledge and the pursuit of knowledge and education are values, regardless of their applied and practical value. Therefore, in my opinion, the value in science is not its contribution to practice, but rather the understanding itself. This is not the place to comment on errors in your demonstration of morality.
