Write on silk

שו"תWrite on silk
שאל לפני 4 שנים

Is it permissible to write a seal, when silk is placed on the parchment and has holes in it, which are the letters, in which the scribe 'writes'?
Is this kosher writing?
And if we don't call it writing, would it be permissible to write like that on Shabbat?

(My late grandfather told me that the main opposition in his area to machine-made matzos was because widows and orphans made a living by baking matzos by hand, and when they brought the machine-made matzos, they were reluctant to bake them, and not really because they were concerned that machine-made matzos were not kosher or even fancy. Is it possible that progress can be made in the Satam as well, and only concerns about employment for the army of scribes are preventing it? And if so, why do the interests of the scribes outweigh the interests of the public in the eyes of halachic adjudicators?)

In my opinion, there is no prohibition in this. I will tell you a secret that I heard from two friends of mine. They went to one of the great rabbis about thirty years ago with this question, and he replied that there is no prohibition, but he would never allow it in public. Lest all the Archi Parchi come and write a seal. In short, there is probably no prohibition, but those who prohibit it do so not out of fear for the livelihood of others, but out of understandable concerns. Although in my opinion, even if there are understandable concerns, no one has the authority to prohibit it.
