Q&A: Ascending the Temple Mount Nowadays
Ascending the Temple Mount Nowadays
Question
Is it permitted to ascend the Temple Mount nowadays?
Answer
I haven’t looked into it myself. But there is a presumption in favor of those who have looked into it, that one can rely on what they say. The main question is whether it is important, not whether it is possible. In my opinion, not really. On the other hand, I also do not accept the view that ascending should be forbidden because it agitates the Arabs. Surrendering to violent savages carries long-term costs.

Questioner (another one):
Among those who have looked into it, some forbid it and some permit it. Shouldn’t someone who has not looked into it himself rule stringently because of a doubt about a Torah-level prohibition, or follow his rabbi?

Rabbi:
Absolutely. My impression, however, is that the view of those who forbid it is usually not based on a substantive investigation, but rather on sheer conservatism or on concerns such as people not maintaining ritual purity, and the like.
