Q&A: Racism Toward Gentiles
Racism Toward Gentiles
Question
I have a question about racism toward gentiles. I’m not talking about our attitude toward gentiles, but rather about the fact that we were privileged and they were not. “Who chose us … and gave us His Torah,” “Who has not made me a gentile” — we are happy that we were born Jews. (And even though any gentile can convert, if we say that being Jewish is not just a technical matter but something of the soul, then someone who from the outset did not have a Jewish soul would not really have been suited to convert.) And I also know that everything is organic and we are all really part of the same unity. But still, is it “fair” that they do not have the privilege of being Jewish? That they do not receive the “plus” that we receive? In the end, explanations can be given, but isn’t it still a reasonable feeling of deprivation, of “Why did they get it while I did not?” And even if he is happy with his gentile identity because it suits him, still, if he were Jewish then surely his joy would be more complete — because if not, why would it matter to me whether I was born Jewish or gentile? After all, in the end I am happy that I am Jewish because I know there is added value in it. So isn’t there a kind of deprivation here?
Answer
This question arises not only with respect to gentiles. Moses our Teacher was also born with abilities that I do not have, for example the radiant glow of his face from birth. So it seems to me that each person has his own role in creation and in the universe, and together all of us will merit whatever comes from fulfilling that role. I do not think it is a special privilege to be Jewish, except relative to me. A Pole has a special privilege in being Polish. Each person should fulfill his role as he understands it.
