Q&A: On Stereotypical Truth……
On Stereotypical Truth……
Question
Hello Rabbi Michi,
I read your article “Salah, This Is the Land of Israel.” I have a few reservations about it, and even one or two questions……
But there is one point that I definitely want to clarify with you……
Don’t you think that, to some extent, the very fact that to this day there are Moroccans who are “stuck” in Dimona, as opposed to Romanians who left there as soon as they could, is the result of a deliberate policy (indirectly, perhaps even directly)? In addition, can you really compare the situation of the immigrants from Russia in the 1990s, who arrived in a developed State of Israel with an average family size of one and a half children and education, to the immigrants from Morocco (most of them villagers) with an average family size of 9 children, who arrived in the 1950s to an austerity-state in its infancy with an existential question hanging over its head?????
If your view is that this is indeed the case and that it is basically entirely their own fault….. what, then, is the cause of it????? Is it an ingrained primitive culture? Maybe some shared genetic defect? Masochism?
Thank you…….
Y
Answer
I did not write that it is entirely their fault. I also completely agree that lack of education (and that too was challenged above here) plays a role in the matter. Still, the discourse of deprivation is distorted, and that is what I came to point out.
