Q&A: Different Religions and Beliefs
Different Religions and Beliefs
Question
Hello, I saw in your fifth notebook regarding other religions that you wrote this: “First, let us narrow the range of possibilities even further and focus on the monotheistic religions. The other religions do not present alternatives that include serious and reliable reports of revelation.”
My question is: on what basis do you say that the other religions do not present serious reports of revelation? There are so many religions—have you checked all of them? How is it even possible to check all of them?
Answer
That is my impression. If there is other concrete information, we can try to examine it.
Discussion on Answer
You yourself said there is no way to seriously examine all religions. And since that’s so, one goes by overall impression. What do you suggest? That I devote my life to a research journey among pagans in Africa?
Specifically since this is only one part of the puzzle.
What do you mean that this is only one part of the puzzle?
I explained in the fifth conversation in The First Existent. The conclusion about the revelation at Mount Sinai is the result of a puzzle made up of several different considerations.
That’s the point I’m asking about: what is your impression based on? Did you examine most or all religions? Don’t you think there is some obligation to examine religions seriously so we can know we’re not mistaken?
