Q&A: The Ceasefire in Lebanon
The Ceasefire in Lebanon
Question
What do you think about the ceasefire that is being implemented?
Answer
It’s hard to know. There is logic to reaching an arrangement, if only so that we can focus on Gaza, as I wrote in Column 678, but I’m very skeptical that we will actually stand by the conditions we set (if we even set any—I’m not sure). I read various descriptions from Struck and Smotrich claiming they supposedly set demands as a condition for their consent. Those are of course blatant lies meant to appease their angry base. For example, that no house the IDF destroyed may be rebuilt. Or that all the achievements will be preserved (what does that even mean?). The question is what will happen in practice. It’s very likely there will be a gradual erosion back to the previous situation. We’ll wait and see.
What has been will be again. We have to replace the leadership, Rabbi. I’m asking seriously: why don’t you go into politics? To fulfill the verse, “He who wins souls is wise.”
